Employment Opportunity:
Horse Ranch Working Manager We are seeking a long-term, full time, salaried Ranch Manager to handle all phases of daily operations on the ranch, manage small seasonal crew, and act as primary ranch hand. Position requires all of the following: Knowledge of horses and ability to ride - including breaking, training, riding, and handling all types, from broke dude horses to broncs that buck. Rodeo background a plus. Must know how to shoe horses, administer basic vet and herd health care, pack, and wrangle dudes. Must know how to handle livestock, how to apply and read brands, how to load and haul livestock. Person must have the ability to age a horse and be confident enough to purchase horses for the ranch. Candidate must like horses and treat them like business partners, not pets or machines. CDL - Commercial drivers license required to haul horses and hay in large semi, occasionally with doubles & oversized loads. Driving record must be clean and insurable, position requires delivering loads of 2 to 30 horses on overnight hauls to neighboring states. Both pick-ups and gooseneck and semi trailer used frequently. Mechanical Skills: Person must be able to fix horse trailers, tires, truck engines, small engines, farm machinery, and do routine maintenance. Ability to weld is a must. Must be able to maintain a shop inventory of tools, parts, and supplies and keep environment clean and organized. All of our equipment is used or old, knowledge of "make-doism" is mandatory. Must take care of equipment. Ranch Skills: Must know how to fence, understand basic building construction (incl. electricity and plumbing), operate heavy equipment, irrigate w/wheel line, clean and repair tack, most general ranch skills. Business Skills: Must understand business principles. Person must be able to keep records, stay on a budget and compare costs, calculate feed amounts, understand basic bookkeeping, comprehend pricing structure and ranch programs and handle contracts with clients, keep driving records, and be trustworthy enough to handle expense accounts and regulatory paperwork. Spanish is helpful. Personal Skills: Client relations require pleasant, confidant demeanor and willingness to teach and keep guests safe. Abuse of alcohol or any drug use is prohibited. Position requires someone who can make decisions on their own, within general guidelines of the business. We work hard here, and all employees must work harder and be driven. This position frequently requires travel and often requires working alone in remote locations. Self-motivation is a must. Must get along with owners and be able to take orders and give orders. Understand and adhere to concept of "ride for the brand." This position is comprehensive. It is directly under the ranch owner, who has acted in this capacity for many years and now must phase into general operations manager and host. The person who fulfills this job will become the primary spokesman for the ranch and act as representative. In the absence of the owners, who maintain general manager position, this person will handle all phases of the operation and must have a comprehensive understanding of the business to make decisions necessary. Compensation: $38,000 yearly, includes two paid weeks vacation each winter, and feed/pasture for four personal horses (with ranch herd). Benefits do not include supplemental insurance or housing.
