It all started with Amber, a little grade palomino mare we bought as a four year old through the loose horse pen. She became Renee's personal saddle horse, and twelve years later is known as the best horse we've had on the ranch...ever. That says a lot, considering the many wonderful horses (and some of the not-so-wonderful) we have had the privilege of riding over the years. For years we have looked for her equal. Finally, we found her origin in South Dakota.

The qualities that make a good ranch horse here at Montana Horses might be different than other places, but we have found this line of horses to be the best suited for what we do here as work at the Mantle Ranch. To be a ranch horse on a horse ranch, they have to have stamina, be strong, smart, athletic, agile, and fast. They have to be tough. They have be a step above the herd and willingly give everything when called upon. They become "staff" and they know and love it.

2007 marks the beginning of a new generation of ranch horses that we are raising to work here and elsewhere. They will be brought up with our saddle horses, winter on Montana range, run in the rocks and hills and become naturally strong. As two year olds they will be started, then turned out until they are three. They will be worked here as three and four year olds, when some will be offered for sale during our
Annual Spring Horse Roundup & Drive.
